Jonathan Urla, MFA, Certified Pilates Instructor, ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist, Vinyasa Yoga teacher, has been a leader and innovator in the world of health and fitness for over 25 years. An athlete and practitioner of various disciplines, his background includes ten years as a professional dancer and choreographer, in addition to sports training and in-depth study of both yoga and Pilates.
A lifelong student/teacher, writer, and creative force, Jonathan is recognized for a refined approach to Pilates technique, and his ability to present complex and esoteric ideas in a straight forward and accessible manner. His desire for a unified methodology led him to create Yogilates in 1997 as an ideal pathway to optimal fitness and health. The popularity and effectiveness of his work has been noted in newspapers and magazines (see Press), including the New York Times, Newsweek, Shape, YogaJournal, FitYoga, Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, Fitness, Allure, as well as international publications. He has given interviews to ABC News, CBS, CNN, and both Lifetime Live and Discovery Health have produced segments about Yogilates. His book on Yogilates titled, Yogilates - Integrating Yoga and Pilates for Complete Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility, was published by Harper Collins in 2002. Since then, it has been translated into German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. He has also produced and starred in nine yoga and Pilates workout videos. He teaches regularly in New York at independent studios and at the Westside YMCA, and is an continuing education teacher for Hunter College. He also is a contributing writer for the health and wellness blog Women's Voices For Change, where he writes a fitness/lifestyle article every week. He is currently working on another book on the art of aging backwards and how to attain balanced health and happiness through mindful living.
